Do you take time to celebrate your successes?

|

Over the years, I’ve worked in every possible setting in the PR world.

Agency. Corporate. Non-profit. Independent.

One observation through working for those different kinds of organizations: Agency people know how to celebrate.

Big time.

What

Corporate, non-profit and independent peers? Not so much.

I’m not sure why that is. I mean, corporate, non-profit and independent folks are just as successful as agency folks. And, I wouldn’t say those people are less “fun-loving” (remember, you’re talking to one!).

But yet, I’ve noticed that trend. Believe me, I can attest. Us solos aren’t too great about celebrating our wins. It’s nose to the grindstone. And, when our noses aren’t to the grindstone, they’re usually focused on new business, blogging, podcasting or speaking gigs (or, our families, in many cases).

So, the question is this: Why don’t we take time to celebrate our successes?

It’s not like we don’t have regular wins. Whether big or small. The “winning” part isn’t the problem.

I’m guessing it’s the “finding the time” thing.

Or, is it? Maybe it’s really about casting the spotlight on ourselves? About seeming too self-promotional? About basking in the limelight for a few moments? After all, not everyone likes the spotlight.

That could be part of it. But, I tend to think the time aspect is the larger factor at play.

However, that’s kinda crazy, isn’t it? I mean, it’s not like you need a full-day off to celebrate a small win? Heck, you don’t even need a half day. Lunch at an unusual, fun or off-the-beaten path restaurant can be just as effective as a reward as a half-day at a baseball game.

So, I’m not sure the “I don’t have time” excuse works.

Besides, it’s not even really about time. It’s about acknowledging success, right?

That can take many forms. What about a simple gift to a team member, client or colleague who’s really rocking it? But, not just any old gift–a gift that’s personal. From the heart. Something you put some thought into. You might be surprised how much a really good gift matters to someone.

I don’t know. Just been thinking more about this lately. This reluctance to celebrate our wins. I think it’s time to start changing my behavior. To start recognizing my own wins. And, to start recognizing my partners’ and clients’ wins, too.

Who’s with me?
